Prophylaxis (teeth Cleaning)
Patients who stick to the 6 month re-care and cleaning visits overall have less decay, gum disease and oral discomfort resulting in less pain and less dollars spent on restoring oral issues. It is highly recommended by the American Dental Association that patients get their teeth professionally cleaned at least twice per calendar year.
Our Hygienists thoroughly clean the teeth by scaling and polishing to remove coronal plaque, calculus, and stains halting the progression and prevention of periodontal disease and gingivitis. We all know that your at home routine is most important, but the Hygienists at PortSide Dental are full of knowledge and love helping to coach patients with their oral care. You will leave feeling clean and confident that your daily routine is paying off. literally more money in your pocket not spent on Dental. Remember....You only have to floss the teeth you want to keep.
Digital X-Rays
Dentists can tell a whole lot from digital xrays and it is very important patients maintain these records not only for insurance companies, but to prevent future dental disasters. A small amount of decay found on an x-ray that is restored in a timely manor will save that tooth and surrounding teeth from deep decay and a lot of pain that can result in needing a root canal and crown. It is also more cost effective long term.
Oral Cancer Screening
According to the American Dental Association, over 10,000 lives are claimed to oral cancers each year. Oral cancer can include throat cancer, mouth cancer, tongue cancer, and jaw cancer. Early detection may result in better treatment outcomes and may help save the life of you or a loved one.
It’s important to be aware of the following signs and symptoms and to see your dentist if they do not disappear after two weeks.
- A sore or irritation that doesn't go away
- Red or white patches
- Pain, tenderness or numbness in mouth or lips
- A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth

Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in some foods and water. With most patients, they are not getting enough fluoride in their diet and this leads to demineralization of tooth enamel which causes weak structure and decay. It's especially important for patients who are decay prone to not only receive fluoride treatments in our office, but also use products at home that contain higher levels of the mineral.
